The Salt mine in Wieliczka

The Salt Mine in Wieliczka is one of the oldest salt mines in the world. It has been on UNESCO’s First World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage since 1978. Today, the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine combines many centuries of tradition and modernity, the history of several hundred years and an underground metropolis with extensive infrastructure.

The Salt Mine offers exciting routes through the tunnels with charming views on underground lakes. A surprise for a lot of tourists are numerous chapels carved in salt. The most beautiful of them, St. Kinga’s Chapel, astonishes even the oldest globetrotters.

Your route through the mine leads you through galleries and chambers on three levels, from 64 to 135 metres below the ground, including the unique and richly ornamented Chapel of the Blessed Kinga. The route is 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) long and you will have to walk down 400 steps in total.

The journey starts at the Danilowicz Shaft. Here, visitors meet their guide, who during their excursion will tell them everything they want to know about the mine history and its secrets. Visitors will have a moment for reflection hearing the music of Chopin accompanying a light and sound spectacle on the shores of one of the saline lakes. And finally, at the end of the journey an elevator will take them up to the surface.
